Re: The Backlog Check-in Vol. 366: 1/4/25: Ys Memoire: The Oath of Felghana Edition
Games added: Roguebook & Dreamscaper for PC as part of a $3 Fantatical bundle (turns out I already had the 3rd game I picked on GOG, but the others are worth the $3 anyway so I'll live)
Last week: Finished Inscryption, played more Cyberpunk 2077.
This week: More Cyberpunk, and I started Carrion as my "smaller" game
Cane, Inscryption doesn't have much in common with Culdcept besides the fact that they both deal with cards, but you were still correct in assuming that it was my kind of game. Izzy, I'd also say it's 100% your kind of game. It's an experience. I still won't say much about it, because it would be ruining the fun, but anyone who's interested in something truly different and unique and has had their curiosity piqued should definitely give it a go. Just be aware that you need to give it time to truly see what the game is.
I'm also really enjoying Cyberpunk, it's a great open-world RPG with a less traditional setting.
Going back to the grind this week, vacation is over. Will start on my year-end posts if I actually have any downtime.

Yeah, appreciate the recommendation. I was very interested in it already, given the little I'd seen, but your input makes me even more curious. I'll get it sooner or later.argyle wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 5:03 am Izzy, I'd also say it's 100% your kind of game. It's an experience. I've just about finished Poi. There are 100 medallions to collect (I think), and I'm at 98, so I'm pretty close to 100%. There are a couple tedious things left to find, so I may just finish things as is. It's been fun and a good 3D platformer, but it's nothing particularly special.

I'll call that a victory.
Played recently: Far Cry 5
Finished: Far Cry 5
Added to backlog: nothing
Current backlog: 43
I beat Far Cry 5 last night, and I have to issue a warning: It has the WORST ENDING I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED IN A VIDEO GAME. My son-in-law played it and warned me about that... told me he threw his game in the trash afterward. But did I listen? Nooooo. I won't say anything more, but if you ever play it, you might want to just turn it off right when you're taking the main bad guy into custody.
The game had a lot going for it... there's a beautiful world to explore, the shooting is excellent, taking enemy bases is a blast as always, there's a lot of fun hunting and fishing, the vehicle and weapon variety are first-rate (although the wingsuit sucks), and the side stuff and most of the main missions are good. You have some fun options of buddies to team up with, including a dog, a cougar and a bear.
The game comes apart with the human characters (not cartoonish enough to be funny or realistic enough to be believable) and the story (I'm pretty good at suspending disbelief, but this is ridiculous). Ubisoft borrowed themes/beats/moments from great games and developers (Bioshock, Rockstar, Fallout) but without any of the intelligence or finesse.
There are also some repeated story missions that seem designed to make you irritated. They're not difficult, just a total drag.
Overall, FC5 is a pretty fun experience marred by big chunks of stupidity and annoyance and a terrible conclusion.

I'll never finish it, so I looked up the ending on YouTube - man, that's messed up.canedaddy wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2025 11:42 am I beat Far Cry 5 last night, and I have to issue a warning: It has the WORST ENDING I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED IN A VIDEO GAME. I never played a Far Cry game even though I've had 1, 2 & 3 in both my physical and digital backlogs. I don't know what I'm missing, but it sounds like 5 is one to skip, ha.
The one I'm most curious about is 2 - I know it's the most different. Maybe I'll fire up the original sometime this year.
I've been playing The Suffering (PC version) since I picked it up on GOG not too long ago. I had the PS2 version of both 1 & 2, but I figured I'd just play it digitally. It's been pretty fun, although I've already got some complaints. The atmosphere is mostly good and full of gruesome and dark stuff. The main issues are related the mechanics and some of the general design. They're not awful, to be clear, but they're not a highlight either. And since this isn't a slow-burn type of Survival Horror, leaning far more into action-horror territory, I would have like more mechanical finesse than what is present. But overall, I *am* enjoying it.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake has been platinum'd. Great game overall, enjoyed playing through it again after probably 15 years (and with the quality of life enhancements). Post game was kinda meh, but it's easy to cheese with difficulty settings and certain abilities...hey, they made some dumb design decisions so I countered them without wanting to spend a lot of extra time.

Excellent! One of these days, God willing, I shall play that game and thus complete the mainline DQ series!
